Leather Feathers and Ferns

Introducing my beautiful new obsession, Leather Feathers and Fern Earrings. They are beautiful, durable and most importantly, light as a feather. I get endless complements on them when I wear them. They tend to twist and bend with age, only growing more beautiful like a fern through the spring. They're for sale at my Etsy Store.

Remy Friends at Art Always!

What a great day it's been! I had so much fun with the kids from Art Always today. Lindsay Fog-Willits was so generous in allowing me to do a project with this session's classes. Last week the kids designed fish, cut swatches of fabric and colored their drawings to correspond. I sewed them together and today the kids stuffed them, stitched them up and decorated them. What results!

More Geese Up!

I just posted two more geese to the Etsy Store and they're totally cute! I love how these guys are turning out - they're so satisfying to make. I also love how kids grab them by the neck and drag them around, then lift them up for a big hug. So adorable!

Felted "feather" earrings

I've just put these on the Etsy store. They're beautiful earrings that resemble peacock feathers. I get compliments on them wherever I go!

As for a Remy Friends update: I have placed kits in a number of private school auctions so we'll see what comes in the mail. I put a kit in one DC school in particular that I'm very excited about....

Change Purses at The Guild

If you live in Northampton, you can now walk right down to The Guild on Main Street to purchase a "Change" Purse. Bill and Ali kindly offered to put them right on the front counter.

Felted Birds on Etsy!

This winter I was completely bought out of my felted birds and when I managed to make more my cousin needed a bunch of them for a play she was doing. Here, finally, after a productive road trip to Boston, are a new batch of felted birds. These ones are really cute and one even has a nest and eggs! These are definitely my best seller and a great gift at $14.00. You can find them in my Etsy Shop.

Last week I decided to make a dress for Saskia and remembered this fantastic goose fabric I bought in San Fransisco at Britex Fabrics.

The goose fabric inspired the pocket and the dress inspired the stuffed geese. What a day!

This is a Remy Friends Kit. Each kit is different, coming in a one-of-a-kind monster bag that can be converted from a shoulder bag to a backpack! In the kit you'll find:

Paper to draw on
A stamped envelope to send me your design
An information card to tell me about your drawing
Remy Friends information sheet giving you the history of Remy Friends

You draw a picture, put it in the pre-addressed envelope with your information card and anything I may need to know about your friend, and send it to me. I will sew an interpretation of your Remy Friend and have it in the mail to you within three weeks!

Hunter's Sweater

Here's a little break from Remy Friends. My mom got bought me this yarn for a sweater for Hunter over Christmas. And now, the second day of March and in the middle of a huge snow storm - it's done!

I'm particularly happy because this is the first sweater I've ever finished.

Remy Fish!

Remy poses with Baba 1, the first of eight fish he designed and we made together. I cut out the bodies and heads, while Remy cut all the fins. I will be doing a similar project with the students at Lindsay Fog-Willit's Art Always program this spring.

Emily's Bunny

Here it is, finally up and finished: Emily's Bunny. Or I would like to call it the first "Remily Friend". This little bunny was so much fun to make and I am very happy with the way it turned out. Emily drew it for me in my studio while she, Lucien, Remy and I hung out and came up with ideas for new toys. After she finished her drawing, we got to it right away, with the kids helping me by stuffing the arms and legs. Today I completed it and feel great to have this little fellow in the world.

Emily was particularly innovative with the way she designed her friend. She was very conscious of the materials and took full advantage of what we could do with fabric, buttons and velcro. You can see that the bunny's belly-button (yes, rabbits have them too) is a button that also acts as a fastener for the built-in pocket. She designed a removable carrot and head of lettuce that can velcro on and off the arms. What a kid!

This illustrates for me one of the most exciting things about Remy Friends. Kids so often are asked to make art and engage in creative visual play, but they are rarely asked to design. I always dreamed of making my own house with a slide from the roof (who hasn't?) and remember a particularly great day dream where I realized that if there are toys then there must be toy designers. What a dream job!

Emily really made me smile with this one.

I just finished Emily's Bunny and can't wait until Hunter comes home with the camera so I can post a picture! She did such a good job designing it, really taking in to account that it would be made from fabric and included buttons and even velcro. It was a pleasure to make and is for her birthday. I hope she likes it!

This is the one and only Coolalala, designed by my five year old cousin, Jasmine. Coolalala was originally drawn in black with grey polkadots, but I had this perfect fabric in green with blue. Jasmine's mom, Jana, asked her if it would be okay and she said yes. I love the big eyes and their decorative spirals!

This monkey has been a definite favorite of Remy Friends followers. Mar Mar's Monkey was drawn by Remy for his three-ear-old friend Amartya. He and I talked about moving the ears to the side of the head to make it more monkey-like. I absolutely love this guy - it was so much fun to make.

I used fleece for the first time on Hosie's suggestion and found it so forgiving and easy to work with. The ears are doubled polar fleece with machine embroidery and the legs and tail are tubes of fleece. I made a second one for Remy's cousin, which turned out a little smaller and had a thicker tail. This one is about 13 inches wide and as tall.
